Bus Safety Rules

Once you have boarded the bus, move toward the rear and be seated without delay. If there is a vacant seat, please take it. If you must stand, hold tightly onto a post or handrail behind the white line. In order to maintain safety, MTD requires that all passengers adhere to the following:

• Stay behind the line on the floor behind the driver at all times.
• Board and exit in an orderly manner.
• Never interfere with the driver’s ability to drive safely.
• No spitting or throwing any objects inside or out of the bus.
• No use of threatening or profane language or gestures.
• Playing a radio is allowed with the use of headphones.
• No hanging of any body parts or other items outside the bus window.
• Please take a seat as soon as possible (one seat per person and please keep your feet off the seats.
• Please observe priority seating for passengers who are elderly or passengers with disabilities.
• Oversized packages should be stowed out of the aisle. Storage racks may be available.
• Vandalism is not tolerated and is punishable by law.
• No combustibles including: matches, lighters, smoke bombs, fireworks, vehicle batteries, gasoline, paint, etc.
• For safety’s sake, strollers must be folded and babies held securely.
• Remain seated while the bus is moving. Do not sit in the aisle.
• No pushing, shoving or fighting.
• No eating or drinking. No alcoholic beverages.
• Shirts and shoes are required in buses and in the Transit Center.
• Smoking on the buses, at the Transit Center, or within 20ft of any bus stop is prohibited.
• Bicycles are not allowed inside the bus (except folding bikes held by passenger).
• Surfboards under 6 ft are allowed in the buses but not in the shuttles.
• Assist small children on and off the bus. Please keep children away from the curb while waiting for the bus.
• Please stand back from the curb while waiting for the bus to arrive.
• Please keep children safe and seated when possible while on the bus.
• Please keep children from accidentally running into the path of the bus or other passengers.
• Please keep the volume of your conversation low in person or on a cell phone for the courtesy of others.
• Use the handrails when boarding, riding and departing the bus.
• Service animals such as guide dogs must be on a harness or leash at all times and either sit on the floor out of the aisle or be held on the passenger's lap.

Violation of these rules may result in refusal of service.

In general, be observant, alert, watchful and aware. If something doesn’t look quite right, alert your driver and/or report it to the authorities at 911. Take the initiative and become the community’s transit eyes and ears. We can all count on a safe ride if we look out for each other!
