GENERAL PURPOSE
The Maintenance Supervisor Night Shift (MSNS) supervises and directs Mechanics in preventative maintenance and inspections, repairs, road calls, and overhauls, in a fixed maintenance facility, and, works with maintenance employees to identify and resolve mechanical problems. The MSNS directs, coordinates, and supervises employees in day-to-day operations servicing the districts fleet, including maintenance; including cleaning, fueling, empty cashboxes in buses and maintain cleaning log of bus fleet.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS – Essential functions may include, but are not limited, to the following:

•Coordinates maintenance department workload for the night shift, sets priorities, and schedules preventative maintenance on MTD fleet to ensure that preventive maintenance is performed efficiently and on time
•Monitors daily road call reports for trends and/or repeat defects. Analyzes the causes of road calls, implements reduction plans, reviews results, and modifies as needed to attain on-time performance acceptable to the District
•Ensure all Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR’s) are checked and safety defects are repaired and signed off prior to vehicle being placed back in service
•Provides the Superintendent of Maintenance or the Department Manager with a daily fleet status report, including road calls, implement time card labor hours and overtime nightly, and fleet problems/issues
•Supervises staff directly and monitors assignment and completion of projects and repairs
•   In coordination with the Superintendent of Maintenance or the Department Manager or Human Resources, counsels employees on problems affecting work performance, determines the need for discipline, issues adverse letters, and participates in disciplinary or grievance hearings
•   Communicate with Operations Department staff regarding needs of both departments
•   Schedules major and minor bus component replacement, overhauls. and installation of new equipment on buses
•   Comply with the random drug testing provisions for safety-sensitive classifications as required by the Department of Transportation (49 CFR, Part 655).
•   Follow and adhere to District Policies and Collective Bargaining Agreement
•   Performs related duties as required



Qualification:
QUALIFICATIONS: The following are the minimum qualifications, which an individual needs in order to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.

Education and Experience
•High School Diploma or GED, or any combination of education and experience to fulfill the duties of the position


•Four (4) years of experience in public/private sector transportation fleet maintenance department or a closely related field including four (4) years of experience in a supervisory/managerial capacity
•Journey level experience as a bus/heavy duty truck mechanic and or equivalent formal mechanical education or training, including electric bus
•Proficiency in basic computer skills in Microsoft Windows environment
•Public Agency/Transit District experience is a plus +
•Bi-lingual in Spanish preferred, but not required


Skills, Abilities and Qualifications:
•Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class A commercial driver license with passenger and air brakes endorsement. Clean driving record required.
•Principles of supervision, staff motivation, and progressive discipline
•Principles and practices of labor and materials cost-estimation; tools, equipment and materials used in a heavy-duty maintenance and repair facility; preventative maintenance
•Prior Transit District or Public Transit Agency experience
•Mechanical knowledge of diesel trucks/buses
•Knowledge of hybrid electric or all electric drive systems in fleet
•Understand and troubleshoot automotive electrical problems using VOM, code readers and other technical troubleshooting tools.; including low and high voltage systems
•Ability to learn and use Computer based Fleet Maintenance Software
•Knowledge of EPA and CAL/OSHA rules and regulations including storage and safe work practices using protective equipment and around all industry-applicable combustible or otherwise hazardous materials and spills and how to contain
•Work well under pressure and complete assignments within tight deadlines
•Communicate effectively and clearly in both oral and written form
•Excellent interpersonal skills
•Demonstrated ability to work well with diverse groups; establish and maintain good working relationships with staff, as well as communicate professionally with passengers and peers with courtesy, diplomacy and tact

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be available to work evenings and weekends, and be on-call 24 hours a day. This position is considered safety sensitive under FTA drug and alcohol regulations, and therefore subject to random drug testing while on duty


WORKING CONDITIONS – The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Environment - May drive district vehicles while conducting district business. Work is mostly performed both in a small office and in the bus yard, which is largely exposed to the noise and operations of various motor vehicles and equipment.


Physical – Ability to push, pull, and carry a minimum of 50 pounds. Hearing and speaking sufficient to articulate and present information in person and telephone. Vision within normal range with or without correction; sitting or standing for extended periods of time, walking on uneven surfaces; use hands to handle, feel and operate standard office equipment including work assigned computer. Mental capability to use or apply analytical reasoning and concepts, read and interpret documents, observe and interpret people and situations, perform highly detailed tasks and work under deadlines.

Hazards – Exposure to traffic, fumes, dust, and dirt.
