Why is there an opening on the Board of Directors?

Santa Barbara MTD’s Board of Directors is recruiting for an At-Large Board Member and is seeking applications from members of the public. The Board has 7 positions–2 appointed by the County of Santa Barbara, 2 appointed by the City of Santa Barbara, 1 from the City of Goleta, and 1 from the City of Carpinteria. The seventh board position is an at-large position, and is appointed by the other 6 appointed Board Members. The available position is a partial term that will run through July 2, 2023.

What kind of commitment is required?

The primary duty of the Board is to set overall policy direction for MTD and to maintain financial accountability for the use of public funds. The MTD Board meets every other Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Santa Barbara MTD Office, 550 Olive Street in Santa Barbara. Additional sub-committee meetings during the month and occasional special board meetings may occur during the course of the year. The time commitment for the position averages 9-12 hours per month. Additional time may be required for review of agenda materials, liaison meetings with other public entities and other MTD Board duties that arise. MTD Board directors are paid $60 per meeting, up to a maximum of $180 per month.

  • Ethics Training, per CA AB1234
  • Sexual Harassment Training, per CA AB1825
  • Annual Statement of Economic Interests (Form 700) reporting per the California Fair Political Practices Commission

Do I have to live within the boundaries of the Transit District?

Yes, you must reside within the boundaries of the Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District to be eligible for appointment. A map of those boundaries can be found by clicking here.

How do I apply for appointment?

Interested individuals can apply for this position in two steps:

In order to be considered both steps must be completed by 2:00pm PST on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. Applications/questionnaires received late will not be accepted. MTD will not be responsible for delays due to mail delivery.

When are applications and resumes due?

Both steps of the application process (application/questionnaire complete and resume emailed) must be complete by 2:00pm PST on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. If submitting a hard copy of your application, questionnaire, and/or resume, they must be dropped off or received in the mail by that time. Late submissions will not be accepted.

What happens after I apply for appointment?

The MTD At-Large Recruitment Ad Hoc Committee will review all resumes and questionnaires, and on November 1, 2022 will recommend prospective appointees to the full Board of Directors for the purpose of being interviewed.

The MTD Board of Directors will conduct interviews with the recommended candidates.

Interviews will take place in the John G. Britton Auditorium at MTD Administrative Offices, 550 Olive Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101, on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at 8:30am. The MTD Board of Directors is scheduled to make the appointment at that meeting.
