SANTA BARBARA – Santa Barbara MTD held the 7th Annual Youth Art Poster Contest this spring in Grades 1 through 6 with a theme of “Storybook Buses”. With over 85 entries, MTD employees voted on the winners, and the winning works of art will be featured inside MTD buses for the next year.

Participating sites included several South Coast afterschool programs and libraries. Entries came from the Goleta, Eastside, Central, & Carpinteria Libraries, City of Santa Barbara RAP Program, the Carpinteria & Greater Santa Barbara Girls, Inc., and the Downtown Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, Westside, & Goleta Boys & Girls Clubs.

SANTA BARBARA – Santa Barbara MTD is hosting a set of public outreach meetings this April, and is inviting the public to take a brief survey giving feedback on proposed service changes to local bus service. These meetings are held annually in the spring to receive input on the proposed changes that would go into effect on August 14, 2023.

Proposed changes include:

• New peak hour Line 19x (Carpinteria/SBCC Express) serving Carpinteria, Santa Barbara’s Eastside, and SBCC
• Restoration of Line 28 (UCSB Shuttle) service
• Lines 23 (El Encanto Heights) & 25 (Ellwood/Winchester Canyon) endpoint connection
• New microtransit service in Goleta and Isla Vista

MTD invites the public to learn more and to give feedback via an online survey that explains all the proposed changes at www.sbmtd.gov/servicechanges. The survey is available in English and Spanish.

MTD REANUDARÁ EL SERVICIO REGULAR ENTRE SEMANA EL JUEVES 12 DE ENERO

SANTA BARBARA— A partir del inicio del servicio mañana, jueves 12 de enero de 2023, todo el servicio de autobuses de MTD se reanudará con un horario normal entre semana. También se reanudará el servicio de refuerzo a las escuelas secundarias y preparatorias.

SANTA BARBARA – On Wednesday, January 11, 2023, MTD bus service will run on a Sunday schedule, with Line 20 (Carpinteria) and Line 28 (UCSB Shuttle) back in service. This means that all service represented on the standard Sunday schedule is planned to operate.

The special Carpinteria Shuttle put in place today will no longer run after 8:00 P.M. Tuesday night.

MTD does not have the appropriate workforce levels on Wednesday to operate school booster service to the Junior Highs and High Schools.

On Thursday, January 12, 2023, all service is expected to resume with a normal weekday schedule. Schedules can be found at https://sbmtd.gov or by calling the Customer Service line at (805) 963-3366.

SANTA BARBARA – While Carpinteria remains inaccessible via the 101 Freeway, Santa Barbara MTD will be starting a special shuttle service within the City of Carpinteria today, Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at 2:00 P.M.  

This bus service will operate every 30 minutes, with the bus leaving the Carpinteria Avenue and 7^th Street stop (on the south side of Carpinteria Avenue) on the hour and half hour. The service will run until 8:00 P.M. this evening. Should the 101 Freeway still be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, January 11, 2023, the special service will operate from 8:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. Regular bus fare will be required for riders of this service. This route is identical to the Carpinteria end of the Line 20 route that normally runs all the way between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. While MTD is unable to get buses through the rest of the Line 20 route due to the 101 closure, the bus being used for this special service was staged in Carpinteria ahead of the storm.

MTD OPERARÁ TRANSPORTE ESPECIAL EN CARPINTERIA, SERVICIO A INICIO A LAS 2:00 P.M. HOY

SANTA BARBARA—Mientras Carpinteria permanece inaccesible a través de la Autopista 101, Santa Barbara MTD iniciará un servicio de transporte especial dentro de la Ciudad de Carpinteria hoy, martes 10 de enero de 2023, a las 2:00 p.m.

SANTA BARBARA – The Santa Barbara MTD Board of Directors has an at-large board position available, and is seeking applications from members of the public. The available position is a partial term that will run through July 2, 2023.

The primary duty of the Board is to set overall policy direction for MTD and to maintain financial accountability for the use of public funds. The MTD Board meets every other Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Santa Barbara MTD Office, 550 Olive Street in Santa Barbara. Additional sub-committee meetings during the month and occasional special board meetings may occur during the course of the year. The time commitment for the position averages 9-12 hours per month. Additional time may be required for review of agenda materials, liaison meetings with other public entities and other MTD Board duties that arise. MTD Board directors are paid $60 per meeting, up to a maximum of $180 per month.

Interested parties are required to fill out a questionnaire, which can be found at sbmtd.gov/atlarge. SANTA BARBARA – After an extensive request for qualifications and proposals (RFQ/RFP) and negotiating process, today the MTD Board of Directors of Santa Barbara MTD voted unanimously to approve an option to ground lease agreement with ConAM RE Investments, LLC (ConAm) to jointly develop transit-oriented, multifamily rental housing on MTD’s vacant property on Calle Real in the Eastern Goleta Valley.

Based on the project parameters set by MTD in the RFQ/RFP, ConAm has proposed a transit-oriented development project with approximately 333 residential rental units with not less than 15% of the total units affordable to very-low, low-, and moderate-income households. The affordable units will be income-restricted through recorded long-term covenants and integrated throughout the overall project site. The project will include onsite amenities for the residents and an after-school learning center. The project is adjacent to MTD’s Line 7 route and will provide new transit riders, as well as the opportunity for MTD to expand its operations throughout its service area.

The project must be reviewed and approved by the County of Santa Barbara and other government agencies with jurisdiction over the property.

“Housing is the biggest crisis facing our community today. We are proud that MTD is able to enter into an agreement with the aim of producing new transit-oriented housing supply on our property that is consistent with the County’s Eastern Goleta Valley Community Plan, while providing an opportunity for MTD to further expand its transit services in eastern Goleta,” said Dave Davis, MTD’s Board Chair.

Additional weekday morning trips added to Lines 12x and 24x

Santa Barbara MTD makes service changes to local bus service every year in mid-August. This year’s service changes will go into effect at the beginning of the day on Monday, August 15, 2022.

Due to a shortage of bus operators, temporary schedule reductions were made on April 25, 2022 in order to improve system reliability. Because the bus operator shortage continues, the majority of these temporary reductions will remain in effect through August 15^th.

After the April reductions, MTD staff heard from regular riders that specific early morning trips on the Line 12x (Goleta Express) and Line 24x (UCSB Express) had been suspended, making it difficult to make it to work and other morning obligations. Taking this feedback, MTD staff worked to identify specific trips to reinstate on these lines.

The following trips will be added to the schedule for August:

Two Line 12x weekday AM outbound trips departing the Transit Center at 6:05 a.m. and 6:30 a.m.

One Line 12x weekday AM inbound trip departing Hollister & Storke at 7:58 a.m.

One Line 24x weekday AM outbound trip departing the Transit Center at 7:25 a.m.

Additionally, a minor routing change will happen for the Line 17 (Lower West/SBCC). Due to circulation improvements at the San Andres and Carrillo intersection in Santa Barbara, the inbound Line 17 route will now turn left on Canon Perdido from San Pascual, then right on San Andres before turning right on Carrillo to head to the Transit Center. This one block change does not affect any stops or schedules for the Line 17; it simply makes an operational improvement for the buses. This change now means the inbound and outbound routes are identical.

The new schedule guide reflecting these changes is available online here. The printed version of the schedule guide will be available at the Transit Center and onboard buses at the beginning of August.

LOS CAMBIOS ANUALES DEL SERVICIO MTD SE REALIZARÁN EL LUNES 15 DE AGOSTO

Se agregaron viajes adicionales en la mañana a las Líneas 12x y 24x

Santa Barbara MTD hace cambios de servicio al servicio de autobús local todos los años a mediados de agosto. Los cambios de servicio de este año entrarán en vigencia al comienzo del día lunes 15 de agosto de 2022.

Debido a la escasez de operadores de autobuses, se realizaron reducciones temporales de horarios el 25 de abril de 2022 para mejorar la confiabilidad del sistema.
